September 14 was the Hindi divas observed all over the country. Hindi is the national language and is a very crucial part of Indian culture. Here are some facts that you may not have known about it.

  1. The origin of the word Hindi is from the Persian word Hind. It means land of the Indus River.
  2. There are over 400 million people who speak Hindi as first language while 120 million use Hindi as second language.
  3. The main states which speak Hindi are Bihar, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Jharkhand.
  4. Other countries apart from India where people speak Hindi are Mauritius, Fiji, Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad, Tobago and Nepal.
  5. Hindi has its origins from the ancient Indian language Sanskrit. It has evolved in its present form through Prakrit and Apabhramsa languages.
  6. The script in which Hindi is written is Devanagari script which came into existence in the 11th century.
  7. The first published Hindi book is Prem Sagar by Lalloo Lal. It was published in 1805 is considered the first published Hindi book.
  8. Hindi belongs to the India group of the Indo-Iranian sub-family of the Indo-European family of languages.
  9. Hindi took from Turkish, Persian, Arabic, Portuguese, English and South Indian Dravidian languages.
  10. There are many English words like guru, jungle, karma, yoga, bungalow, cheetah, looting, thug, avatar which were derived from Hindi.
