Economy Zones set to offer budget-friendly food for travellers
In response to frequent passenger complaints about high food prices at airports, authorities have proposed setting up economy zones that will feature budget-friendly food and beverage options.
With airport restaurants often charging steep prices, these new zones aim to make dining more affordable for passengers, alleviating the financial strain on those travelling through major airports, sources revealed.
Unlike typical airport dining areas, these economy zones will function as quick-service counters without seating arrangements.
Passengers will pick up their orders directly from the counters and either enjoy their food at stand-up tables or take it with them on the go.
This efficient model is designed to offer convenience without the added cost of sit-down service, making the food significantly more affordable.
This development follows a series of meetings led by the civil aviation minister, who, after considering passenger feedback, reached a consensus to launch work on the economy zones.
Discussions are ongoing between the Airport Authority of India (AAI), airport-based food outlets, and other agencies to finalize the operating structure and logistics of these zones, with the initial rollouts planned for newer airport locations.
Over recent months, numerous travellers have voiced concerns regarding overpriced items at airport eateries.
Former Union Minister P. Chidambaram highlighted the issue in September, posting about a Kolkata airport café charging ₹340 for a cup of tea—made simply with a tea bag and hot water.
The airport management acknowledged his post and reassured passengers that steps were being taken to address such pricing concerns.
This initiative is expected to improve passenger satisfaction by providing accessible, budget-conscious dining options that meet the needs of a variety of travellers.
With lower prices and easy accessibility, these economy zones will offer much-needed relief for passengers, ensuring that affordable dining options are available without the premium often associated with airport food.
If successful, this approach may be expanded to additional airports, benefiting countless travellers across India.
