Losing weight – The Ayurveda way

One of the biggest problems of present day generation is the problem of obesity. Even though there are several methods to lose weight, it is always advisable to lose weight in the most natural way possible. Undergoing weight loss surgeries generally tend to cause a lot of side effects which would be problematic. However, Ayurveda has several prescribed ways to help in weight loss.

As early as 1500 BC, Ayurveda has described obesity as Medrog, which means the disease of fat. Ayurveda has also formed several tips related to way of living to lose weight and avoid obesity.

The first is the prevention of it. It is commonly suggested in Ancient India that prevention is better than cure. Ayurveda and modern science both state that a lack of physical activity is dangerous and should not be practiced. Eating food at proper times and eating in limit is also suggested.

In order to lose weight, one should follow the Ayurveda suggested diets. Ayurveda suggests that one should take only one source of carbohydrate at a time. Common sources of carbohydrate in Indian diet include rice, potato, or wheat etc. These type of foods should be taken only in a single meal to lose weight efficiently. Inclusion of light pulses is also recommended. Eating a vegetable salad before every meal will help in reducing hunger and prevents over eating.


Healthy spices like fenugreek, coriander, turmeric, and cumin seeds should be added to diet to improve health and lose weight. Substances like salt, sugar, oil, and packaged foods should be taken very limitedly.

Physical activity is suggested by Ayurveda. According to Ayurveda, there are three body types: Vata, Pitta, Kapha. Vata type body should do yoga, Pitta should do Brisk walk, aerobics, and Kapha should do brisk walking, running etc.

These are the recommended exercises for each body type by Ayurveda. Following the above methods will help in losing weight fast.
