Watermelon contains more than 90 per cent of water. It is loaded with vitamins including A and C, and antioxidants.

It contains minerals like calcium, zinc, manganese, potassium, iron etc.

Watermelon has several health benefits:

  • Being rich in antioxidants, watermelon prevents cancers especially cancers of the digestive tract. It has lycopene to reduce the risk.
  • It helps lower bad cholesterol and hypertension. The study of the American Journal of Hypertension showed that watermelon could effectively reduce hypertension in obese adults. The citrulline in watermelon helps increase the nitric oxide in the body which thereby lowers blood pressure.
  • Watermelon protects the health of eyes due to lycopene. It prevents age-related eye problems.
  • It improves digestion. Due to its fibre content, it regulates your bowel movements as well.
  • It is loaded with vitamin C. Hence, it prevents infections including asthma. One study proved that watermelon reduced the risk of asthma.
  • Regular consumption of watermelon juice improves blood circulation. It also lowers muscle soreness.
  • It treats the inflammations effectively.

Caution: Like any other food, excessive consumption is not good and may lead to stomach problems. People suffering from hyperkalemia (high potassium levels) should not consume more than one cup of watermelon a day.
