Health Benefits of Calendula
Calendula is also known as pot marigold which is similar to marigold. The flower can be used in salads, stews, toothpaste etc.
It can be made into oil, gel, tea, cream, tincture etc. The petals of the flower are rich in antioxidants and fatty acids like calendric and linoleic acids.
The flower has ornamental, cosmetic and culinary uses.
Calendula has several health benefits. Here is a list of some of them:
- Calendula has antibacterial properties and helps kill harmful oral bacteria that cause gingivitis. That’s why the flower extracts are widely used in toothpaste and mouthwash.
- It can treat inflammation due to its anti-inflammatory properties. It can prevent ulcerative colitis.
- Some studies proved that calendula has antitumor properties; hence it can be used in the prevention, treatment and even palliative care of cancer.
- Calendula is beneficial for eye health. It can prevent cataract and macular degeneration.
- It has anti-spasmodic properties. Hence, it helps treat spasmodic conditions including menstrual cramps.
- It can boost the healing process of the wounds and ulcers.
- The flavonoids in the flower help relax the muscles and ease menstruation and its painful symptoms.

- Calendula may interact adversely with sedatives. Hence people consuming those should avoid taking it.
- Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers should avoid using it.
- People who are under the medication for diabetes and blood pressure should avoid it.
- Those who are allergic to daisies and ragweed should avoid it.
Calendula can be consumed in the following forms:
- The dried petals can be added to soups and cakes.
- Chopped flowers can be added to the salads. They can enhance the flavor in the soup.
- Dried flowers can be used in the tea. They can also be used in making an omelette.
