Habits that are damaging your brain
The brain is perhaps the most fascinating and important organ of the body, but it also one of the most susceptible to damage. Since this organ collects and organizes all of one’s knowledge and memories, not to mention guiding how we function as people, the health of the brain is crucial to the overall health of the person. Here are some mundane activities that can vitally damage the brain, and should thus be avoided:
•Boredom can be one of the most damaging things to intellectual capacity, since a lack of mental stimulation causes the mind to fall slack. The mind should be stimulated in thought at all times.
•Skipping breakfast can cause a thirty six percent increase on the risk of brain hemorrhage, can cause poor operation of the brain due to the lack of glucose, and can lessen visual and spatial understanding. A good, hearty breakfast should thus be eaten every day.
•Overuse of cell phones can damage the brain in several ways, including confusion and headache due to radiation and even an increase in the risk of brain cancers and tumors. Cell phones should be used more sparingly as to lessen these risks.
•Working through a sickness can have a negative impact on the brain, since it is fighting off the illness with the immune system. It can prolong the illness’s length and also increase risk of being affected again, as well as damaging the function of the brain. Thus, take rest when ill, don’t overwork.
•Overeating unhealthy foods can lead to the diminishment of brain performance, dementia, and a smaller volume of the brain. Such foods should only be eaten sparingly and in small amounts.
•Reclusiveness can damage the brain, with a lack of social interaction possibly leading to anxiety and depression. It is important to orally communicate to stimulate certain parts of the brain.
•Sleep eliminates toxins from the brain and helps store collected memories. A lack of it can damage those two functions, and can also lead to accumulation of plaque and various brain diseases.
•Smoking cigarettes is one of the most damaging things to the brain, with cigarettes causing damage to the parts of the brain that allow for motor functions and coordination. This is something that must be avoided at all costs.
•A high sugar intake can cause damage to the nervous system and has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. It is thus important to control one’s intake of sugar to avoid these damages.
•Air pollution can cause the shrinkage of the brain and impairment of cognition. It is also linked with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, among others.
•Covering the head with a pillow or cover before sleeping can cause a buildup of carbon dioxide and oxygen around the head. When inhaled in mass amounts together, this can have a brain-damaging effect.
•Multitasking can lead to brain shrinkage from the overload of work and information incited on the brain. Thus, it is rather recommended to follow a routine in the daily activities.
