IRCTC’s ticket cancellation refund system
To bring transparency in the refund process on booking tickets from authorized agents, Indian Railways introduced an OTP-based system.
As per this system, passengers will receive an OTP on their phones with which they can cancel their e-tickets and get their refunds by entering the password.
The Ministry of Railways stated on Tuesday that this OTP based ticket cancellation refund system works when the tickets are booked through authorized railway ticketing agents.
Also, it can be used be for reserved tickets that are cancelled or fully waitlisted dropped tickets.
Passengers would receive an OTP on the registered mobile number which was used to book the ticket.
This helps passengers know the exact amount that would be refunded against the cancelled or fully waitlisted dropped ticket.
The new system is intended to ease the process of getting refunds from agents on the cancelled tickets on time.
In the past, agents, especially unauthorised ones used to enter their mobile numbers while booking the ticket. So, the amount of refund and other details associated with that ticket used to be sent to their number.
As a result, customers are being duped by agents on the actual refund amount in many instances.
But, now the OTP is sent to the customers with which they know the amount to be refunded. This helps prevent the duping by the agents. However, customers have to ask the agent to enter their number while booking ticket and their booking should be done through authorized agents only.
Here are the details to cancel the tickets. Visit the website of IRCTC. Click on “Cancel Ticket” and choose “Counter Ticket” option under “Trains” section.
Enter all details like PNR number, train number and the Captcha and click “Submit”. You would receive an OTP on the mobile number that was used while booking the ticket.
You have to validate the cancellation request by entering the OTP. Then, all details related to the ticket would be displayed. Verify and click on “Cancel Ticket.” You will see the total refund amount there. You can visit the agent who booked the ticket and inform the OTP to get the refund.
