New Tatkal rules from April 15: Faster bookings, fairer access for all
Indian Railways is rolling out major changes to its Tatkal ticketing system starting April 15, aiming to curb misuse and streamline the booking process.
Whether you’re a daily commuter or planning a sudden trip, these updates are designed to make last-minute travel more efficient and accessible.
To begin with, the Tatkal booking timings have been revised to reduce congestion and improve availability.
Now, AC class tickets (1A, 2A, 3A, CC) will open at 11:00 AM instead of 10:00 AM, while non-AC classes (SL, 2S) will start at 12:00 PM, both one day before the journey.
Moreover, Premium Tatkal bookings will begin at 10:30 AM, giving passengers a better shot at confirming tickets.
The Current Reservation system remains unchanged, still available up to 4 hours before departure.
Another significant change is the restriction on booking through agents. From 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, agents will not be allowed to book Tatkal tickets, thereby giving regular passengers a fairer chance during peak hours.
Additionally, the booking experience on the IRCTC website and mobile app has been upgraded.
For instance, registered users will now benefit from auto-filled passenger details, saving valuable time.
Furthermore, the payment timeout window has been extended from 3 to 5 minutes, giving users more breathing room to complete transactions.
The captcha process has also been simplified, enabling quicker checkouts.
A few important points to remember:
- Only four passengers can be booked per Tatkal PNR
- No concessions are allowed under this quota
- A valid ID proof must be carried during travel
These improvements, combined with a unified login system across IRCTC’s platforms, are geared toward making Tatkal bookings smoother and more transparent.
The revised system puts genuine passengers first, ensuring that urgent travel needs can be met with less stress and better fairness. So, if you’re planning to travel on short notice, make sure to stay updated and book smart!
