Drinking alcohol in public will be fined in Goa
Goa is renowned for its beaches. At the same time, Goa reminds people of alcohol parties and other enjoyable activities.
Consumption of alcohol is no more allowed in public places in Goa. Those who violate the law should have to pay a fine.
Though the fine amount is not revealed, sources state that it will be hefty.
Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar announced this matter on Monday.
Alcohol consumption in public places creates lot of disturbances to the lives of normal people and the government sees imposing a heavy fine could stop this menace.
The new rule will be in force from August 15.
The CM said the citizens should have civic responsibility. But, some people do not have that and misuse the privileges that are given by the government.
He quoted an example in which the footpath along the river in Panaji city is being used by the people to drink beer.
The footpath was developed for people to walk around the river and enjoy the natural beauty.
But, in reality, it is not being used for the specified purpose, rather people are misusing it.
In this regard, the government wants to levy penalties on alcohol consumption in public places in Goa from the Independence Day onwards.
In addition to alcohol consumption, littering will also attract a heavy fine.
Even the fine for plastic carry bags will increase from ₹100 to ₹2,500.
The CM also said that people normally offer flowers to God and throw them in Mandovi river after wrapping them in plastic bags which is polluting the river.
Some others are throwing them on the bridge. Due to this, the bridge has to be cleaned up every day.
CM says that throwing flowers in the water is acceptable to some extent, but usage of plastic is not tolerable.
The new penalties will be enforced from next month.
