Genetically modified crops opposed by Ayush ministry
The issue of genetically modified crops has always been a sensitive one. As the government is trying to find the right base to solve the issue, the Ayush ministry has made quite a strong move against the use of genetically modified crops.
Ayush ministry deals with Ayurveda and other Indian systems of medicine. They raised many concerns regarding the problems that come from GM crops. They raised issues with the environment ministry regarding the effect GM crops can have on several wild varieties of medicinal plants which are used in Ayurvedic medicine.
Based on this issues, the Ayush ministry is seeking representation in the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC). It is the apex body which clears GM field trials in India. Previously in 2010, the ministry has raised issues on the Bt Brinjal and shared their concerns with the environment ministry. Again in late 2014, they raised these issues by writing to the environment ministry.
The Modi government is currently in a complicated position with regards to GM crops. This is because many right wing outfits like Swadeshi Jagran Manch are showing their strong opposition with regards to this issue. So far, the government has not made any clear policy regarding it.
