Ayush Ministry warns against misleading ads for traditional medicines

In recent days, many companies have issued false claims for their traditional medicines, which have led to adverse effects on the public.

In this context, the Union Ayush Ministry issued a public notice yesterday. In this notice, the Ministry cautioned against advertisements that falsely claim “miraculous or supernatural effects” for traditional medicines.

These include Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and Homeopathy (ASU&H) medicines.

The Ministry stated that such misleading ads pose serious risks to public health by promoting unverified treatments.

In this context, the Ministry clarified that it does not certify, approve, or license any ASU&H medicines or companies.

Instead, the responsibility of issuing manufacturing licenses for these medicines lies with the State and Union Territory Licensing Authorities under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.

The Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, of 1954, strictly prohibits advertisements that promote drugs for certain diseases or conditions.

Claiming miraculous effects for treating diseases is illegal, and individuals found guilty of violating this law face legal penalties.

For ASU medicines containing Schedule E1 drugs, consumption should only be under the supervision of a registered medical practitioner.

Labels on these medicines must clearly display cautionary instructions in both Hindi and English. Thus, they must ensure consumers are aware of the need for medical oversight.

The Ministry emphasized the importance of consulting registered doctors before using ASU&H drugs, warning against self-diagnosis and self-medication, which could lead to harmful consequences.

The public is encouraged to report any misleading advertisements, false claims, or fake ASU&H medicines to the State Licensing Authority or the Ministry of Ayush.

By doing so, they contribute to curbing unsafe practices and protecting public health.

The Ministry’s notice serves as a reminder to be cautious about relying on claims of miraculous cures.

Besides, it also highlights the importance of seeking proper medical advice for any treatment using traditional medicines.
