PM Modi unveils 109 climate-resilient seed varieties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 109 high-yielding, climate-resilient, and biofortified seed varieties yesterday. These seed varieties enhance farm productivity and increase farmers’ incomes across India.
Developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, these seeds encompass a wide range of crops, demonstrating a significant leap toward sustainable farming. These include 34 field crops and 27 horticultural crops
At Delhi’s Pusa Campus, Modi unveiled these innovative seed varieties in three experimental agriculture plots.
The event also provided an opportunity for the Prime Minister to interact directly with farmers and scientists, highlighting the government’s commitment to agricultural advancement.
The field crops introduced various crops including food crops as well as commercial crops. These include cereals, millets, forage crops, oilseeds, pulses, sugarcane, cotton, and fibre crops.
Meanwhile, the horticultural sector saw the release of new varieties of fruits, vegetables, plantation crops, tubers, spices, flowers, and medicinal plants.
Since 2014, PM Modi has been a staunch advocate for sustainable farming practices and climate-resilient agricultural methods.
His focus on enhancing farmers’ income through innovative and sustainable practices has been a cornerstone of his agricultural policy.
By promoting biofortified crop varieties, he aims to address not only the challenges of climate change but also the pressing issue of malnutrition in India.
The introduction of these seed varieties is closely linked to government initiatives such as the Mid-Day Meal scheme and Anganwadi services, which are designed to combat malnutrition by providing nutritious meals to children.
By integrating biofortified crops into these programs, the government seeks to improve the nutritional quality of food provided to vulnerable populations.
This release marks another step forward in the ongoing efforts to modernize Indian agriculture.
With the backing of these new seed varieties, farmers across the nation can expect improved yields and better resilience against climate challenges. Ultimately it intends a stronger and more sustainable agricultural sector.
