Marathi rule for drivers sparks debate

The Government of Maharashtra has made Marathi proficiency mandatory for auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers, effective from Maharashtra Day on May 1. Drivers must prove they can read and write Marathi at RTO checks or risk licence cancellation, a move that has triggered strong reactions across the state.
