Standing tall: The inspiring journey of a woman from Gaya

In Bihar’s Gaya district, Rita Rani, a 52-year-old schoolteacher, is living proof that height doesn’t define strength.

At just three feet tall, Rani has overcome challenges most would find overwhelming and emerged as a symbol of resilience, compassion, and determination.

Rita teaches at Government Middle School, Dhanawa, where her unique and engaging teaching style has made her popular among students.

However, it’s not just in the classroom where she shines. Her commitment to social work, especially during the Pitru Paksha Mela, has earned her deep respect in the community.

Every year, when thousands of pilgrims visit Gaya to perform rituals for their ancestors, Rani steps in to help the elderly and physically challenged.

She arranges wheelchairs at her own expense, ensuring no one is left behind due to disability.

Before joining the government school in 2010, she taught at a school for children with special needs.

Teaching children with inconsistent behaviour was tough, but Rani treated each child with the affection of a mother, despite being single herself.

Her dedication led to her being honoured with the Bihar Gaurav Award in Patna and recognition from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar during his recent padyatra.

Born into a family of six siblings, Rani was the daughter of a police officer, Balkrishna Prasad.

Her father spared no effort in seeking treatment for her dwarfism, even taking her abroad. Yet, fate had different plans.

She gave up her dream of becoming a police officer like her father and chose to pursue a career in teaching after completing her bachelor’s degree from Magadh University.

Initially, students hesitated to accept her due to her height. But soon, they realised her talent.

Though she received several marriage proposals, Rani chose to remain single, dedicating her life to education and service.

Today, she stands not just as a teacher but as a beacon of hope for people with disabilities, showing the world that courage, not height, defines a person’s true stature.
