From trafficked victim to football coach: Birasmuni's inspirational journey

In the heart of adversity, a beacon of hope emerges as 21-year-old Birasmuni Dhanwar, once a victim of trafficking from Jharkhand, transforms her traumatic past into an inspiring tale of resilience.

Rescued from a brick kiln on the banks of the Hoogly, Birasmuni, now a national-level footballer is rewriting her narrative by providing coaching to young students at her school in Ranchi.

ASHA (Association for Social and Human Awareness) played a pivotal role in Birasmuni’s redemption.

Secretary Ajay Jaiswal recounts their rescue mission in 2011, liberating children from the clutches of bonded labour in brick kilns near the Hooghly River in West Bengal.

Birasmuni, among the 200 rescued children, found herself in Jharkhand and enrolled in various schools.

Birasmuni’s passion for football blossomed during her school years in Gadkhatanga, Ranchi.

Today, pursuing graduation in arts, she not only plays football at the national level but imparts her skills to nearly 30 girls at her alma mater, residing with her at the ASHA hostel.

At 5 am and 4 pm daily, Birasmuni dedicates herself to coaching her pupils, juggling academics at JN College in Ranchi.

Despite facing hardships in her own journey, she aspires to make a career in football while pursuing her studies, embodying the spirit of giving back to society.

Birasmuni’s coaching extends beyond the field, becoming a source of inspiration for her students.

From aspiring football players to future sports teachers, her impact reaches far beyond the game.

Students like Annu Kacchap and Savita Kumari, hailing from humble backgrounds, dream of emulating their coach’s success.

The principal of Government Upgraded Middle School at Gadkhatanga, Bhudeo Chandra Mahto, commends Birasmuni’s dedication and recalls her innate talent in football since childhood.

Birasmuni, once a victim of trafficking, now stands tall as a symbol of triumph against adversity.

In a state where trafficking remains a pressing issue, Birasmuni’s story shines as a testament to resilience, emphasizing the transformative power of sports and education.

As she guides her students toward brighter futures, Birasmuni Dhanwar exemplifies the strength that can emerge from the darkest of pasts.
