GoCoop: Weaving digital success for India’s rural artisans

India’s traditional crafts sector continues to evolve as technology creates new opportunities for rural entrepreneurs.

Among the startups leading this transformation is GoCoop, an online marketplace connecting handloom weavers directly with global buyers.

Founded in 2014 after two years of groundwork, GoCoop supports rural cooperatives and artisans across India.

Today, the platform represents more than 50 production clusters and nearly 350 cooperatives or master weavers.

Besides them, several NGOs, social enterprises, and individual artisans also sell through the platform. As a result, over 40,000 products have reached more than 50,000 customers worldwide.

The Indian handloom and handicraft industry generates nearly ₹33,000 crore to ₹41,000 crore annually.

Furthermore, millions depend on rural crafts and textile work for their livelihood. However, artisans often receive only a small share of the final product value.

Middlemen dominate the supply chain, while producers struggle with poor market access and weak bargaining power.

GoCoop addresses this gap through a transparent digital marketplace. For instance, a handmade carpet sold internationally may fetch 10 to 15 times the amount paid to the weaver.

Similarly, domestic buyers may pay three to five times more than local market prices. Therefore, direct online selling significantly improves artisan incomes and cooperative profitability.

The startup also provides strong operational support to sellers. It conducts workshops on e-commerce and digital marketing for cooperatives and weavers.

In addition, GoCoop assists with product photography, cataloguing, and online listings at no cost. Every item receives proper tagging and inventory management support.

Moreover, the company trains sellers in packaging, quality control, shipping, and order handling.

Designers also collaborate with weavers to create products suitable for export houses and international retailers. Consequently, artisans gain access to larger and more profitable markets.

GoCoop further simplifies payments through an escrow-based system. Once products are shipped, payments reach sellers within three days through banking channels.

Besides retail sales, the platform also helps brands, boutiques, and designers source handmade Indian textiles directly from artisans.

By combining technology with traditional craftsmanship, GoCoop is helping rural India build a more sustainable and profitable future.
