Rare Planet's journey towards empowering artisans

In the vast expanse of India’s rich cultural heritage, handicrafts and handlooms hold a special place, known for their quality and diversity across the globe.

Yet, despite the Indian handicrafts industry being valued at an impressive $7 to $8 billion, local artisans have faced enduring hardships.

Middlemen exploitation undervalued sales, and a lack of development funds are among the key challenges that have plagued craftsmen for decades.

Addressing these issues, Ranodeep Saha, a visionary entrepreneur from Kolkata, launched Rare Planet in 2017.

It aimed to provide sustainable income to these artisans by promoting and selling indigenous Indian handicrafts through eCommerce and direct retail.

Starting initially to sell durable, microwave-proof terracotta kulhads, Rare Planet has now expanded its product range to include a variety of items.

These include stationery, jewellery, pottery, bottles, and home decor products made from terracotta, copper, ceramic, brass, wood, and marble.

This expansion reflects the startup’s commitment to diversifying the opportunities for local artisans.

Rare Planet stands out for its dedication to empowering rural artisans. The startup has successfully connected over 2,500 artisan families across India, ensuring they receive more orders, consistent work, and access to necessary machinery and tools.

By doing so, Rare Planet not only provides these artisans with a platform to showcase their skills but also helps in preserving India’s rich handicraft traditions.

Currently, Rare Planet’s products are accessible in over 60 stores nationwide, including prominent names like Crossword and WH Smith, and online through its website and other major eCommerce platforms.

With an annual run rate of ₹6 crore in the last financial year, the team is now targeting a monthly run rate of ₹2 crore.

Looking ahead, Rare Planet aims to significantly expand its artisan network to 25,000 and plans to introduce authentic handicrafts from various Indian cultural hubs by 2022.

This ambitious vision underscores Rare Planet’s role not just as a business, but as a crucial player in the revival and sustenance of Indian handicrafts.

It ensures that the country’s artisans are celebrated, supported, and secured financially for their invaluable contributions to India’s cultural legacy.
