Padma Awards 2026 honour India’s unsung changemakers

India annually honours service and excellence on Republic Day, celebrating contributions that shape society beyond headlines.

The Padma Awards once again highlight service that strengthens the nation.

The 2026 list was announced today and recognises 45 individuals for distinguished contributions across diverse fields.

These honours celebrate dedication in social work, education, healthcare, public service, and community welfare.

Importantly, many awardees worked quietly at the grassroots for decades. Several belong to marginalised communities, including Dalit and backward sections, primitive tribes, and people from remote or difficult regions.

Despite limited resources, they created a lasting impact through sustained community engagement and local leadership.

Moreover, this year’s list reflects a strong focus on social inclusion. Many recipients devoted their lives to serving Divyangjan, women, and children. Others focused on Dalit and tribal welfare.

Together, their work promoted education, healthcare access, sanitation, sustainability, and livelihood generation across rural and underserved areas.

Meanwhile, the Padma Awards remain among India’s highest civilian honours. They are conferred in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri.

Padma Vibhushan recognises exceptional and distinguished service. Padma Bhushan honours the service of a high order.

Padma Shri acknowledges distinguished service in any field. The awards carry prestige rather than any cash reward.

This year also includes nationally known figures among the honourees. Actor Dharmendra received the Padma Vibhushan posthumously.

Former Kerala chief minister VS Achuthanandan was similarly honoured. Their contributions continue to influence culture and public life.

Additionally, several prominent personalities were awarded the Padma Bhushan.

These include former Jharkhand chief minister Shibu Soren, renowned singer Alka Yagnik, tennis legend Vijay Amritraj, and Malayalam cinema icon Mammootty.

Their recognition reflects excellence in public service, sports, music, and cinema.

The Padma Awards 2026 underline the nation’s gratitude toward both celebrated icons and silent contributors.

By honouring grassroots changemakers, the awards reinforce values of service, inclusion, and commitment to social progress.
