Google’s new AI safety tools protect against scams & malicious apps
Google has introduced two powerful AI-driven tools to protect Android users from the rising threat of phone scams and malicious applications. These tools are Scam Detection and Google Play Protect Live Threat Detection.
They are aimed at enhancing real-time security. The tools leverage AI to analyze conversation patterns and app behaviours and provide alerts to users in potential threat scenarios.
The first tool, Scam Detection, is integrated into the Phone by Google app. It is initially available for Google Pixel 6 and newer models in the U.S. through the Google Beta Programme.
This feature works by analyzing live conversation patterns during calls to assess whether they fit the profile of known scam tactics, such as a caller impersonating a bank employee and requesting financial transfers.
Different from traditional caller ID features that rely solely on phone numbers, Scam Detection uses on-device machine-learning models to detect potential scams based on conversation flow.
For instance, the AI can identify if a caller claims to represent a bank due to a breach and then prompts the user for sensitive data.
If the AI detects signs of a scam, it provides an audio and haptic alert, as well as a visual warning on the screen.
Users have control over this tool and can enable it for specific calls or all incoming calls in their settings, while Google assures that no audio or data is stored or shared, ensuring privacy protection.
The second tool, Google Play Protect’s Live Threat Detection, extends protection to installed applications by continuously monitoring apps post-installation.
If an app exhibits suspicious behaviour, such as interacting with other apps without authorization, Live Threat Detection alerts the user, empowering them to take timely action.
This feature focuses initially on apps classified as stalkerware or those collecting sensitive data without explicit consent.
Google’s AI can even identify dormant apps that lie inactive initially to avoid detection, making it harder for malicious applications to bypass security.
Both tools represent a significant step in securing Android devices against evolving threats, offering a proactive approach that combines user privacy with AI’s real-time analytical capabilities.
By providing timely alerts, Google empowers users to detect and respond to security risks, reinforcing Android’s defences against scams and privacy-infringing apps.
This proactive approach reflects Google’s commitment to not only advancing digital security but also putting control into the hands of users to safeguard their data effectively.
