Google’s cleanup: deadline looms for dormant Gmail accounts
In a recent notice sent out to Gmail users, Google has issued a warning that inactive accounts face the risk of deletion starting December 2023.
The company has set its sights on accounts that have not been utilized in at least two years. It emphasised a move to enhance security measures and protect users from potential threats.
For those actively engaged with Gmail, Docs, Photos, and Calendar, there’s no need for concern, as the impending changes will not affect regularly used accounts.
However, individuals with Google Accounts lying dormant for an extended period must take note of the impending deadline.
The tech giant stated that if a Google Account had not been used or signed into for at least two years, then the company might delete the account and its contents as well.
This statement from Google underscores the security rationale behind the decision.
Dormant accounts become vulnerable targets for scammers, often characterized by outdated or repurposed passwords and a lack of two-factor authentication. Besides, they have inadequate security checks. Thus, they pose a great threat to security.
The deletion initiative serves as a preemptive measure to fortify user security, preventing potential breaches that could stem from forgotten or unattended accounts.
Google’s emphasis on maintaining a safe online environment prompts users to prioritize the usage of active accounts and adhere to essential security practices.
The deadline set for December 2023 is a clear signal for users to review their account activity and ensure they meet the criteria for account preservation.
Google’s motive is not arbitrary; it is rooted in the commitment to safeguard users from potential security risks associated with dormant accounts.
As the digital landscape evolves, user security remains paramount.
Google’s move to encourage account activity and stringent security measures aligns with the broader industry goal of fostering a secure online experience for all users.
