Helping hands to Chennai

Due to devastating floods, people in Chennai are suffering very much. Though the rains have stopped at present in Chennai, the City is under water and it is very hard for people to get essential supplies.

In this scenario, people are being exploited by exorbitant prices. In some places of the City, one litre packet of milk was being sold for Rs.100 and tomatoes and beans were being sold at Rs.80 per kg. People had to spend Rs.150 to get a 20 litre mineral water bottle which is generally available for Rs.30.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi who visited the flood affected areas in Tamil Nadu yesterday had announced Rs.1000 crore for flood relief. This is additional amount to Rs.940 crore package which was announced by PM last week. Besides PM, several helping hands came forward to help Chennai.

Google introduced a tool to offer help to Chennai people. This Google spreadsheet offers relief and rescue related information. It contains all detailed information regarding the basic necessitates of food, electricity and all other essentials. The tool has emergency helpline numbers, people who offer shelter to people in need, and other related information.


The Telangana State government is sending essential items, clothes and medicines to Chennai. The TS government is even ready to help in restoring power and communication services. Electric transformers, electric poles, electric cables and other infrastructure help is offered by the TS government.

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will be sending one lakh Rail Neer bottles and has dispatched 60,000 one-litre Rail Neer bottles in the first lot to flood-affected people in Chennai.

Various startups rallied to help Chennai. Socialcops, Zomato, Delhivery, Paytm, Ola, Practo, Urbanclap, Housejoy and Freshdesk are some of the startups which are offering essential help in Chennai.

Several websites are also helping people in Chennai who are affected by heavy rains. Chennairains.org is providing the resources of shelter and their contact details. Users who are in need of aid can also post their required need on the website. They can use the links of aid available there as well.
