Project Chirag to offer solar electricity
Most of the teenagers normally go to school or college, spend time with their gadgets or friends and live happily in the way they feel happy. But these three teenagers are different. The three teenagers are Sirish Nandimandalam, Varun Srinivasan and Varun Sudhakar.
They are the students of Oberoi International School in Mumbai. They go beyond the desire to live in a comfort zone and set themselves to contribute to society. In this context, they came through Project Chirag. It was an initiative that was started by H.R. College students in Mumbai.
Under Project Chirag, the villages chosen have no electricity access to provide solar electricity. So far, over 45,000 villagers in 237 villages through 7 states have benefited under this project. Impressed by this initiative very much, these teenagers set to themselves to offer solar lighting under this project in the coming one year for 1,000 houses in rural areas. Furthermore, they joined as Youth Ambassadors and started fundraising for this project.
Within two months, they succeeded to get funds to provide solar lights to 500 houses. They used them to light up solar lights in Rajasthan. Another four members Ajay Damodar, Ayesha Mirchandani, Suryakant Phadke and Alexandra Smith joined them in this project. The team educated the villagers by visiting each house in the village and explaining them the usage and maintenance of solar lights.
