Low-cost ventilators developed by Indian couple
COVID-19 cases have been increasing not just in India, but in other parts of the world as well. The USA has the highest number of coronavirus cases. Hence, the shortage of ventilators is one of the most common problems in many parts of the world.
In this context, several people and companies are trying to design the best affordable ventilators to save the lives of the people.
Here is an Indian-American couple who developed a low-cost ventilator in just three weeks to treat COVID-19 patients.
Devesh Ranjan along with his wife Kimida Ranjan developed a portable ventilator. He is a professor at Georgia Tech’s George W Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering. His wife is a practising family physician in Atlanta.
The couple designed this ventilator to treat acute respiratory distress syndrome, the common complication of severe COVID-19.
The ventilator can be manufactured in less than $100 on a manufacturing scale. The ventilator is called Open-AirVentGT.
The ventilator has sensors and computer control to manage certain parameters. Some of them include respiration rate, pressure on the lungs and the amount of air going in the lungs in each cycle.
Devesh said that low-cost ventilators are essential now to combat the present situation across the globe. They can impact several areas. Since the virus is affecting the globe severely, equipment like this will help doctors.
If the doctors have this equipment they can treat the patients effectively. With the prototype design, such ventilators can be made in the areas where they are actually needed so that doctors can use them to treat patients easily.
This ventilator will be manufactured by Singapore-based Renew group. Ravi Sajwan and Indian-origin entrepreneur will be the head of the group.
