Ramu Muthangi, an IIT graduate and former Navy official is the CEO and co-founder of Smart Health Global (SHG) Technologies.

His remarkable creation, the Smart Vision Glasses, is an assistive device enriched with artificial intelligence that’s making a significant impact in aiding people with visual disabilities.

These glasses assist in identifying objects and individuals, measuring distances, recognizing currency, and even reading books and manuscripts in various Indian regional languages.

Ramu’s groundbreaking work earned him recognition from the Infosys Foundation through the Aarohan Social Innovation Awards 2023 in the Education category.

His innovations have been instrumental in improving the lives of underprivileged individuals in India.

With over 35 years of work experience spanning various fields, Ramu has made a significant shift toward AI and ML. These fields include Navy systems design, communications product design, and aerospace engineering.

He acknowledges the profound impact of vision impairment on individuals’ lives, particularly in India, where more than 18 million out of the 40 million global blind population reside, with an additional 258 million partially blind individuals.

Vision impairment affects the quality of life, workforce participation, and productivity, leading to higher rates of depression and anxiety among adults.

Early-onset vision impairment in young children can also result in delayed development across various domains.

Ramu’s personal experience, having witnessed his elder sister lose her vision due to Diabetic Retinopathy, drove him to seek technological solutions.

He envisioned a device that could provide the visually impaired with independence and safety by allowing them to see their surroundings.

The Smart Vision device, equipped with an electronic brain powered by artificial intelligence, has transformed the dark world of the visually impaired into one that is interactive and independent.

After nearly two years of development and one year of clinical trials, the device has become a companion for thousands of visually impaired individuals.

The device, produced in Bengaluru labs, utilizes a high-definition camera to capture images, which are then processed by an AI-driven processor. This technology recognizes objects, surroundings, text, faces, and even currency notes.

It can also read books, road signs, newspapers, and manuscripts while offering audio directions using GPS.

Ramu’s vision doesn’t stop here; he plans to release new versions of the hardware and software to continuously enhance the assistive device.

His Smart Vision Glasses have already made a profound impact, offering hope and independence to those with visual disabilities.
