The architects crafted a three-layered façade to shield the interior from direct sunlight while ensuring the space remains airy and bright.

The first layer, a 220 mm thick external wall, blocks out the harsh sun. Next, a layer of greenery and a bamboo screen add beauty, filter dust, and cool the air. Finally, glass doors invite natural light while keeping the heat at bay.

Central to the home’s design is its sustainability. The on-grid solar system generates approximately 175 units of electricity monthly, outperforming the household’s average consumption of 130-200 units.

This efficiency leads to significant cost savings and the potential for negative electricity load during peak solar months.

Maintenance is minimal, thanks to the system’s straightforward design and grid connectivity, which also enables the sale of excess power.

A 300-litre solar water heater further reduces the home’s energy consumption.

Its 24 glass tubes harness sunlight to heat water, cutting down on the need for electric geysers. This not only saves energy but also lowers utility bills.

Rainwater harvesting is another key feature. Two 2500-litre underground tanks capture rainwater, reducing dependence on municipal water and conserving this precious resource.

The stored water is used for various household needs, promoting efficiency and sustainability.

Inside, the house embraces nature. Every room features a corner dedicated to greenery, creating a serene and relaxing environment.

The façade’s bamboo screen, with its playful circular cut-out, serves dual purposes: it acts as a shading device and a visually appealing balcony railing, framed by two towering coconut trees.

This Mumbai home is more than just a place to live; it’s a bold step towards sustainable urban design, blending aesthetics with eco-conscious living.
