Brothers invent a bamboo windmill that is ten times cheaper
Mohammad Mehtar Hussain and his brother Mushtaq Ahmad had a farm to grow paddy in the winter season. They were from Darrang district in Assam and irrigation for them involved a lot of manual effort or required usage of diesel sets for pumping water which would cause huge drain on resources. In order to tackle this issue, Mehtar came up with the idea to see if they can run a large wheel on wind power.
They then connected this wheel to the hand pump to serve their purpose very efficiently.Based on this plan, both of the brothers started working on making a windmill unit just from locally scavenged material like bamboo wood, strips of old tyres, iron pieces etc. With the help of a carpenter, they developed their first prototype in four days. Since they only used bamboo to make the supporting framework, the final product was just Rs. 4,500. This is very cheap when compared to commercially available wind mills which cost over Rs. 60,000.
The windmill has become very beneficial to many farmers especially the salt farmers who now don’t have to slog for hours to get their work done.
