Sri Rama Navami Celebrations
Sri Rama Navami is the birth anniversary of Lord Srirama and is celebrated all over the India in a grand manner. It falls on the ninth day of Vasant Navratri. The wedding anniversary of Lord Srirama with his consort Sita is celebrated especially in South India. The Kalyanotsavam, the ceremonial wedding anniversary of Bhadrachalam in Telangana is very popular. Several pilgrims throughout the country visit the place to attend the auspicious occasion on that day.
Though it is not a gazette holiday in south India, it is a holiday in many northern states like Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Chattisgarah.
On Sri Rama Navami people clean their houses and decorate them with colors. They tie mango leaves to the entrance of doors. They wear new clothes and make special recipes. Some devotees prefer fasting and eat only fruits. But many others prefer to eat light food and avoid certain items like onions, garlic etc. Panakam, a special drink is made on this occasion with water and jaggery, pepper and cardamom is also added to it. Kosambari, soaked lentils are taken along with the special drink after offering them to Lord as Prasada.
Devotees chant mantras and sing bhajans. In the evening, a procession of idols is organized with great joy. The people in this procession sprinkle colors on each other.
