Popular scientific discoveries mentioned in Vedas

India is the land of Vedas. Many things were revealed in Vedas. Vedas are considered as Pandora box and it is believed that several present discoveries were already mentioned in Vedas. Here are some of the significant scientific discoveries that were taken from the Vedas.

Ayurveda is the ancient system of medicine. It dates back to more than two thousand years ago. Many Ayurvedic ideas were revealed in the Buddhist Canonical writings around 1st millennium BC.

It was believed that Maharshi Kanad introduced the theory of atom. He was the First Nuclear Scientist. His theories were very old and belonged to 2nd century. Darshan-Grantha, a book described the concepts of Kanad about Atoms in detail. Kanad explained that elements are formed due to the specific arrangement of electrons.

Sushruta was an ancient Indian physician. His book ‘Sushruta Samhita’ had remedies for many conditions and diseases. Sushruta was considered as the first plastic surgeon and the father of surgeon. In addition to that, Sushruta revealed about cataract surgery which was performed with Jabamukhi Salaka, a special device. The device had a curved needle used to loosen the lens so that the cataract can be pushed out. Then the eye would be bandaged after soaking it with warm water.


Many of you are aware about the discovery of zero by Aryabhata. He was the first major mathematician and astronomer. His concept of zero has direct link to ‘nothingness’, one of the ancient philosophies of India. Aryabhata worked on the approximation of Pi. He also used signs, symbols and mathematical notations for unknown quantities used at present.

Pascal Triangle was already revealed by Indian authors. Both Varahamihira of 6th century and Halayudha of 10th century talked about the incomprehensible works of Pingala regarding binomial coefficients.

Brahmagupta, one of the oldest Indian mathematicians explained the first instance of finite difference interpolation by the 7th century. Abbreviations were used by him for unknown variables, square roots and cube roots.  His theory of earth’s form which was spherical helped to discover the gravitation theory.

The ancient astronomical theory of Sun in the centre with 9 planets revolving around it was explained in Rig Veda. It led to the discovery of modern solar system.

Vedas had clues about quantum statistics and the phenomenon of eclipses as well.
