Now, Mumbaikars can track the arrival of buses easily with the help of indicators.

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) has installed Passenger Information System in as many as 2,809 buses so that the commuters can track the next bus stop.

The BEST installed these indicators on a pilot run basis. In addition to that, it also installed the Vehicle Tracking System (GPS) in 2,470 buses.

BEST is upgrading its Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) under which the initiative has been taken. The ITMS has been funded by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

The worth of this project is ₹112 crore. The general manager of BEST Surendrakumar Bagde made an announcement on Wednesday saying that all the BEST buses would have this technology in a couple of months.

This technology is expected to improve the efficiency and frequency of bus services.

The ITMS would consider certain parameters like the crowd at the bus stop, available buses at the nearest depot, the speed of the bus, and the distance between two buses on a certain route. Based on these, buses would be arrived at regular intervals at a specific bus stop.

The commuters of the buses can plan their trips on their mobile phones using ITMS.

Hand-held gadgets would be provided to the bus inspectors so that they can easily convey the status of the buses at various bus stops to the central command centre at Wadala, Mumbai.

This information will be used to deploy adequate number of buses to the commuters. Furthermore, the movement of BEST buses would be monitored on a screen by the command centre.

The BEST management planned in the last November to bring in 1,000 midi and mini AC buses on a lease for the convenient travel of the daily commuters.
