Majority of Indians ready to switch to electric vehicles
Indians are becoming environment conscious in these days. They are ready to take even hard steps if it helps curb pollution.
The latest survey revealed this. The survey was conducted by Bengaluru-based non-profit organization, Climate Trends.
Indian government has been taking several measures to control vehicular pollution. However, it is difficult to control it especially in the Nation’s Capital.
Earlier in Delhi, the AAP government implemented odd-even vehicle number plan. It was not very successful.
In this scenario, the survey of Climate Trends revealed that more than 85 percent of vehicle owners are ready to switch to electric vehicles to help reduce air pollution.
Around 2,000 drivers and owners have participated in the survey.
Overall 9 lakh electric vehicles were sold in the last year. This is very less and accounts for four percent of the number of petrol and diesel vehicles sold.
Yet, this news was found to be encouraging for transportation sector as it accounts for approximately 11 percent of carbon emissions that lead to air pollution in all major cities in the country.
The repot of World Health Organization states that nearly 14 of world’s 20 most polluted cities are located in India.
This is an alarming fact. Vehicle pollution not just affects outsiders but also the vehicle owners and drivers.
The poor air quality leads to several health hazards. Majority of the survey participants from the Nation’s Capital said that air pollution was affecting either them or their family members in one way or another.
The situation in other metro cities of country is also not good. These include Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata which are in worrying situations.
Though the survey respondents are ready to shift to electric vehicles they found lack of adequate charging stations as main obstacle.
