In a significant development, the Karnataka Health Department has sounded alarm bells after the detection of the Zika virus in mosquitoes in Chikkaballapur district. The district is situated in close proximity to Bengaluru Urban District.

This worrisome discovery has prompted immediate action and heightened surveillance in the region.

The health department’s proactive response involved testing mosquitoes from 68 different locations across the state. Samples were collected from six specific locations in Chikkaballapura district.

Disturbingly, the Zika virus was found in mosquitoes within the Talakayalabetta village in Sidlaghatta taluk, setting off a series of preventive measures to contain the virus’s spread.


Special meetings were promptly convened by health authorities, issuing clear directives to address the emerging crisis swiftly.

In their efforts to assess the situation, officers collected blood samples from 30 pregnant women and seven individuals displaying fever symptoms. They send these samples to Bengaluru for testing.

The samples were obtained from villages situated within a five-kilometre radius of Talakayala Betta village.

Officers conducted thorough on-site assessments in locations such as Venkatapura, Dibburahalli etc., to closely monitor the situation. Chikkaballapura District health officials confirmed the presence of the Zika virus in Chikkaballapura district. They underscored the urgency of the situation.

Currently, health authorities are diligently tracking the health of approximately 5,000 individuals in the affected region, focusing on early detection and prevention.

The Zika virus is a mosquito-borne viral infection that manifests in symptoms such as fever, rash, headache, muscle pain etc.

Of great concern, Zika has the potential to cause birth defects, making its containment a top priority.

This development has raised alarm due to Chikkaballapura district’s proximity to the state capital, Bengaluru.

Swift and decisive action by health officials is crucial in preventing further transmission and safeguarding public health in the region.

The government is working tirelessly to ensure the safety of its citizens as it confronts this emerging health threat.
