World coconut day celebrations on September 2 | Fusion - WeRIndia

On September 2, Vijayawada will see the celebrations of the World Coconut Day – 2015. This year the theme ‘Coconut for Family Nutrition, Health and Wellness’. An official release from the Coconut Development Board stated that around 500 farmers from various states that grow coconut are expected to attend the event in Vijayawada.

Out of these 500 farmers, around 75 percent are from Andhra Pradesh. The event will have an exhibition which showcases the various latest technologies in the field coconut sector and also various value added coconut products like Neera. According to the board, new statistics of Horticultural division in Ministry of Agriculture, the first place in coconut productivity is occupied by AP. It has a productivity of 14,997 nut per hectare.

The board has been using various development schemes in Andhra Pradesh since 1990 in order to increase the area under coconut. The production and productivity has increased a lot. In AP, there are 610 coconut producers’ societies, 49 coconut producer federations and 3 coconut producer companies. In order to improve the coconut production in AP, the board has allocated Rs 1284.32 lakh during 2015-16 to implement various development schemes in AP. The state is at the fourth place in terms of area with 1,21,920 hectares.
