Tendulkar adopts Donja village
Cricket legend and Rajya Sabha member Sachin Tendulkar has chosen Donja village to develop under the the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojna. Donja village is situated in Osmanabad district, Maharashtra.
Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana programme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2014 with the aim to develop model villages. The rural development programme is mainly focused on social and cultural development of villages.
The programme is intended to be the joint participation of local administrators and Members of Parliament. Under this programme, each Member of Parliament must select one village from the constituency of their representation, adopt and develop it as a model village within a stipulated time period. While choosing the village to adopt, the Members of Parliament should not select either their own village or their in-laws-village.
Earlier in 2014, Sachin Tendulkar adopted Puttamraju vari Kandriga, a small village in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. The village has only 399 people with 110 houses. The village was completely transformed after the adoption of Cricket icon.
Now, Tendulkar has chosen Donja village in Maharashtra. The village has 582 families according to the census of 2011. It consists of 2,863 people out of which 1,508 are males and the remaining 1,355 are females. Around 10 per cent of village population are children aged between 0 to 6 years.
The village has been facing a severe drought for the last few years. Even the incidence of farmers’ suicide is very high in this village and is on rise over the years.
The average sex ratio of the village is 899. It is lower than the state average of 929. At the same time, the Child Sex Ratio is higher than the state average. The child sex ratio is 910 in Donja village whereas the state average ratio is 894. The literacy rate of the village is far lower than the state literacy rate. Villagers are happy about the decision of Sachin Tendulkar and hope for overall village development.
