SC to deliver verdict on Ayodhya today
The Supreme Court delivers its historic verdict on Ayodhya today.
Earlier, in 2010, The Allahabad High Court pronounced to trifurcate the 2.77-acre land among the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and Ram Lala.
However, many appeals challenged the verdict and 14 have been filed in the Supreme Court.
The litigation started way back in 1528 and the apex court is going to deliver its verdict on Ayodhay at 10:30 a.m. today.
In 1528, a mosque was built on the area which was believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram. It is believed that the generals of Mughal king Babur demolished the temple of Ram and built a mosque.
The first instance of violence was recorded in 1853.
Later, in 1859, British administration confined the disputed site saying that the inner area was for Muslims and the outer area was for Hindus.
As people believe it was the temple of Ram, a petition was filed by the head of Nirmohi Akhara seeking permission for Hindus to pray at the inner area.
The Hindus placed an idol of Lord Rama inside the mosque in 1949, from then, gates were locked and the site was recognized as a disputed land officially.
A committee had been instituted by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad under Lal Krishna Advani’s leadership to liberate the birthplace of Lord Rama.
In 1992, the Babri Masjid was demolished by Hindu Kar-sevaks and VHP supporters. Since then, the disputed land is on the news headlines frequently.
Now, in the wake of the Supreme Court’s verdict on Ayodhya, security has been increased in many areas across the country.
All schools and colleges would be shut in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Jammu and Kashmir.
Section 144 has been imposed in these areas. PM Modi appealed to be peaceful and maintain harmony.
He said that the judgment would neither be a loss nor a victory for any party.
