SC: Karnataka Government should release 6000 cusecs water
The Cauvery water strife has been ongoing between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The Supreme Court has taken the decision for Karnataka government to release 6000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu from October 1 till October 6.
The Karnataka government stated that it is not possible to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, however, the Apex Court asked Karnataka to release water. Furthermore, Tamil Nadu requested the Supreme Court to not hear Karnataka’s appeal until the given order was complied with.
The bench in Supreme Court dealing with this matter consists of Justices Dipak Misra and U U Lalit. The bench stated that it is fair for Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu as ordered.
The Karnataka government has recently asked the court to modify its order to release 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water per day to Tamil Nadu. Karnataka claimed that there was no sufficient water in their reservoirs to do so.
Tamil Nadu asked the apex court to not hear Karnataka’s appeal until the state has complied with the order of Supreme Court and the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) first. The Supreme Court already once directed Karnataka government to release 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water per day to Tamil Nadu from September 20 to September 27.
On September 20, SC gave directions to center to constitute the Cauvery Water Management Board (CWMB) as directed by the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) within four weeks.
Regarding the chaos that occurred in the two south India states, SC asked them to do everything to maintain law and order. Before that, the apex court ordered Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs instead of 15,000 cusecs per day till September 20 to Tamil Nadu. Last week, the Karnataka legislature discussed whether or not they should comply with the order of SC.
