Punjab to hold various functions on Lala Lajapat Rai’s birth anniversary
Today, January 28, 2016 marks the 150th birth anniversary of the great freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai. In order to celebrate his birth, the state of Punjab is holding various state level functions. These celebrations are to be held in Dhudi Ke village, the birth place of Lala Lajpat Rai in Moga district. Today has been declared as a public holiday by the Punjab government to mark the birth anniversary of the freedom fighter. He was also known as ‘Punjab’s Kesari’.
The holiday will apply for Educational institutions and offices and other organizations which will be closed today in the honor of Rai. He was a great freedom fighter and is one of the biggest figures in India’s struggle for Independence.
Rai was born in Punjab province which is now part of Pakistan. He was born in 1865. He is also famous for the popular ‘Lal Bal Pal’ trio. During a non-violent protest against the Simon Commission in 1928, he suffered some serious injuries. A few weeks after that, he died in Lahore. His death anniversary is celebrated as Martyrs’ Day in India on November 17.
In the honor of Rai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to the great iconic freedom fighter. The PM also shared some handwritten quotes by Rai himself. Furthermore, he posted a tweet about remembering about the legendary Lala Lajpath Rai on his birth anniversary. Modi called him a visionary with great patriotism and ideals which inspired many people.
Rai was also known as a Punjabi author. He is mainly famous for his leadership in the Indian Independence Movement. While Rai along with several others were boycotting the Commission set up by the British Government for not having any Indians in it, the police attacked them and Rai suffered severe injuries which would lead to his death.
