Punjab man selflessly provides medicines to underprivileged
Rajinder Singh Khote from Moga, Punjab, is known as the Medicine Man. He has been selflessly assisting patients suffering from TB, HIV, cancer, and diabetes for the past 14 years.
Despite running a computer typing and legal forms shop, the 42-year-old Khote dedicates 80 per cent of his time to helping patients with limited financial means.
His tireless efforts have impacted over 40,000 individuals in slum areas across five districts, providing them with essential medicines, food, and support in their battle against diseases.
Khote’s journey began when he had to discontinue his education after completing Class 12 due to personal circumstances.
Determined to make a difference, he established a computer typing shop two decades ago. Since then, he has devoted over 45 per cent of his earnings to aiding impoverished patients, ensuring they receive vital medication and sustenance.
Today, as a Ni-kshay Mitra under the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, Khote volunteers to support the entire Moga district in Punjab.
Motivated by the incident where he helped a cancer patient purchase fruits, Khote vowed to prevent deaths resulting from the lack of medicine and food.
He embarked on a mission to visit both government and private hospitals, discovering numerous patients unable to afford essential supplies. Taking their prescriptions, Khote personally acquired the medications, in addition to food and fruits, ensuring their needs were met.
With time, Khote established an organized system to aid slum dwellers in five districts. He meticulously divides his days, starting at 7 am on his scooter, visiting 15 hospitals daily, and returning around 8 pm.
Collaborating with doctors, they provide him with names, addresses, and ailments of patients in need, enabling him to distribute the medications, along with packed food, biscuits, bread, porridge, and dry milk packets.
Khote possesses detailed lists of TB patients from three blocks in Moga, provided by the district TB officer.
In this district alone, there are over 400 TB patients. Each of them receives a food kit containing eggs, black grams, mixed lentils, rice, biscuits, and four kg flour, along with other essential medicines.
Khote incurs a cost of approximately ₹700 per kit, inclusive of travel expenses.
In addition to his efforts with TB patients, Khote also extends his care to approximately 100 individuals living with HIV.
Crafting monthly kits comprising multivitamins, proteins, iron tablets, dry milk packets, porridge, and rice, he incurs an expense of around ₹400 per kit.
Furthermore, he assists over 300 impoverished diabetic patients by procuring medicines.
Additionally, Khote provides milk packets to pregnant women and underprivileged young children residing in the slum areas of the city.
Rajinder Singh Khote’s relentless dedication and compassionate endeavours have positively impacted the lives of thousands of patients in Punjab’s Moga district.
His unwavering commitment to ensuring access to healthcare and essential supplies for those in need exemplifies the true spirit of selflessness and humanity.
