Yesterday Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Maitri Setu, a bridge that connects India and Bangladesh. PM launched it virtually through a video conference.

The bridge has been constructed over the Feni river in Tripura. The river flows between both countries.

Here are some important things to know about Maitri Setu:

  • Maitri means friendship, and the bridge represents the increasing friendly relations between India and Bangladesh.
  • The bridge has a length of 1.9 km. It joins Sabroom in India with Ramgarh in Bangladesh.
  • It is likely to improve the trade between both countries. It also paves way for the movement of Indians and Bangladeshis.
  • The project’s cost is ₹133 crores. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited constructed.
  • The bridge will reduce the distance between both counties by allowing access to Chittagong Port of Bangladesh. Chittagong Port is just 80 km from Sabroom.

Apart from inaugurating the Maitri Bridge, PM Modi also laid the foundation stone to establish an integrated check post at Sabroom.

This check post enables the movements of goods and people between India and Bangladesh. It will also improve the trading opportunities for products of Northeast states.

The Lands Port Authority of India has engaged with the project, which costs around ₹232 crores.
