Myntra to shut website from May 1

Myntra, one of the biggest online retailers has reported that the website will be shutting down effective from May 1. This is a definitive step towards becoming a mobile app only retailer. Myntra is set towards becoming a mobile only fashion store. This is the first time that an e-commerce player is completely transforming into a mobile only entity.

Myntra was acquired by Flipkart a year ago. If the decision of Myntra goes successfully, then Flipkart might soon follow suit. Flipkart and Myntra have already closed their mobile version of websites in order to guide them towards their mobile app. In the coming weeks, there will be a complete advertising and marketing campaign planned by Myntra to announce its mobile app only presence and the shutting of website.

At present, 80 percent of the traffic and 70 percent of sales that Myntra gets is from its mobile app only. Even Flipkart gets 60 percent of its sales through the app only.

The decision was taken by the online retailer considering the rise of smartphone usage. There has been huge rise in smartphone usage in India as they are becoming cheaper and cheaper. However, only time will tell how successful the decision is.
