In a historic event set to take place on October 14, Maryland will proudly unveil the tallest statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of India’s Constitution.

The 19-foot statue is aptly named the Statue of Equality. It forms a crucial part of the Ambedkar International Centre (AIC) situated on a 13-acre expanse in Accokeek, Maryland. It is located approximately 35 kilometers south of Washington.

This magnificent statue, a towering tribute to the revered figure known among his followers as Babasaheb, is a symbol of immense significance.

Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar, born on April 14, 1891, earned his place in history as the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly’s pivotal Drafting Committee, earning him the title Architect of the Indian Constitution.

Post-Independence, he held the esteemed position of Minister of Law and Justice in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s inaugural Cabinet.

Ambedkar was a driving force behind social movements advocating for the rights of Dalits and untouchables.

The unveiling of this monumental statue in Maryland on October 14 holds special significance as it marks the same date when Dr. Ambedkar embraced Buddhism in 1956, months before his passing on December 6.

This date, October 14, is celebrated as Dhamma Chakra Parivartan Din by Ambedkarites, and it becomes even more meaningful with the inauguration of this statue.

Renowned artist and sculptor Ram Sutar, known for his remarkable work on the Statue of Unity dedicated to Sardar Patel, crafted this exceptional tribute.

The Statue of Unity stands proudly on an island in the Narmada River, downstream from the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat.

The unveiling ceremony on October 14 is expected to draw a substantial gathering of representatives from the Ambedkarite movement and followers of Babasaheb, not just from the USA but also from around the world.

The Ambedkar International Centre emphasizes that this memorial will serve as a platform to disseminate Dr. Ambedkar’s profound messages and teachings. At the same time, it also symbolizes the ideals of equality and human rights.

International participation is expected, with representatives from various countries gracing the occasion with their presence.

This momentous event not only pays homage to an iconic figure in Indian history but also underscores the global significance of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s legacy.

It also highlights his tireless efforts for social justice and his enduring commitment to equality.
