BHIM App introduces biometric UPI payments for faster transactions

Digital payments in India are becoming more seamless with a new update to the BHIM Payments App.

NPCI BHIM Services Limited, a subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India, has launched biometric authentication for UPI transactions.

Users can now approve payments using fingerprint or facial recognition, enhancing speed, convenience, and security for everyday digital transactions.

This new feature allows users to approve transactions up to ₹5,000 using fingerprint or facial recognition.

As a result, users no longer need to enter their UPI PIN for smaller payments. The feature works on both Android and iOS devices that support biometric capabilities.

The update is designed to make payments quicker and more seamless. Users can send money, scan merchant QR codes, or pay online without worrying about entering the wrong PIN.

Therefore, it reduces failed transactions caused by incorrect PIN inputs or forgotten credentials.

In addition, biometric authentication strengthens security. Since fingerprints and facial data are unique and stored securely on the user’s device, the risk of PIN sharing or misuse is significantly reduced.

This ensures that each transaction remains closely tied to the user’s identity. However, for payments above ₹5,000, users will still need to enter their UPI PIN, maintaining an extra layer of protection for higher-value transactions.

The feature improves daily convenience by enabling faster, secure payments for transfers and shopping.

As a result, users enjoy a smoother experience, making digital transactions more intuitive, efficient, and dependable overall.

How to Enable Biometric Authentication:

  • Open the BHIM Payments App
  • Go to Profile and select your bank account
  • Enable biometric transactions
  • Start making payments up to ₹5,000 using your fingerprint or face

This move highlights a clear effort to make digital payments simpler and faster, while ensuring strong security measures remain in place, giving users a more seamless and reliable transaction experience overall.
