Maneka Gandhi proposes panel for #MeToo cases

In order to look into the issues arising from the #MeToo India campaign, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi has said that she is proposing a committee.

The committee will comprise four members including a senior judicial and retired judges.

Understanding the pain and trauma behind every complaint, she supported the movement.

The minister said that she is believing in all of them.

She assured that that four-member panel will address the issues of #MeToo publicly.

Several filmmakers and actors, politicians and journalists have been accused of sexual misconduct, driven by actress Tanushree Dutta.

The #MeToo movement was sped up last week as many women spoke out on sexual harassment at their workplace.

These women have been supported by several celebrities and journalists from various quarters.

Maneka Gandhi added that several men that are in position sexually harass the women irrespective of their field including politics and media.

At such times, women are scared to reveal the facts due to society’s bias on them. They also feel that others would make fun of them for which they keep silence.

But, now that many women are speaking out against the sexual harassment bravely, government should investigate and take appropriate action on every allegation made.

She said that all victims can file complaints against the people who harass them, and there will be no time limit for this.

She added that Law Ministry has been asked to take the complaints from the victims irrespective of the time of the incident even it had happened 15 years ago.

Another Union Minister Smriti Irani also came forward to support the women who shared their bad experiences under the #MeToo movement.

She said that women go to work to earn respectfully, but not to be harassed. She added that her cabinet colleague Akbar will be asked for an explanation after which action will be taken accordingly.
