Kochi launches India's first AC DEMU | Fusion - WeRIndia

The Railway Minister, Suresh Prabhu has launched India’s first diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) train with an air-conditioned coach.

The Angamaly-Ernakulam-Tripunithura-Piravom train service is anticipated to assist in reducing traffic congestion within the state’s quickest growing town.

For the first time in a DEMU service, railways has provided air conditioned service in a coach. It was further stated by Prabhu that they would like to extend it further, as he spoke at a function in Ernakulam Junction.

Top Railway officers said the AC coach provides reclining kind comfortable cushion seats for seventy three passengers just like air-conditioned passenger car of inter-city express trains.

Other coaches of DEMU train are supplied with bench sort cushion seats and huge windows with glass shutters.

The train is provided with bio-toilets and fully vestibule for free movement of passengers between coaches.

Prabhu mentioned the DEMU after the inaugural service would be withdrawn briefly and replaced with MEMU (mainline electrical multiple unit) train until the completion of renovation work of Harbour Terminus and old Railway Stations.

He has further reassured that the first launched DEMU train would be restored after the renovation work has been done. The launching function was attended Kerala Power Minister Aryadan Muhammed, K V Thomas, MP, and Hybi Eden, Congress MLA.
