Free W-Fi

Bangalore station was the first railway station to get Wi-Fi in the month of October. Now it’s the turn of New Delhi railway station. The Wi-Fi project was launched by the Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu initially at New Delhi railway station.

Later this service will be extended to all major stations like Mumbai, Thane and throughout the country. Rail Tel, the PSU run by Indian Railways operates the Wi-Fi system.

Passengers of all 16 platforms on New Delhi railway station premises can now access this service. The service is free for an initial period of 30 minutes and passengers can register by their mobile phones if they required it beyond that. They need to buy the scratch cards that are available at 24×7 Wi-Fi helpdesks on the premises. The Wi-Fi cards are available for Rs.25 and Rs.35 for half an hour and one hour respectively. They are valid for 24 hours.

The entire cost of the project is estimated to be at Rs.50 lakh and the annual maintenance costs are around Rs.16 lakh per annum. This facility is expected to be available in around 75 major railway stations in a year after the successful implementation of the pilot project.
