Jammu to get IIM
Jammu is ready to get an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in the development package of Prime Minister for Jammu and Kashmir. Currently, there are 19 IIMs in the country. With the proposed IIM, the number will be 20.
The Union Cabinet yesterday approved to establish the IIM at Jammu from the current academic session. Initially, the new IIM will function from a temporary campus located at Old Government College of Engineering and Technology for this year. Later an out-campus will be established in Kashmir.
The cost for the establishment of IIM is estimated to be around Rs.61.90 crore to operate in the temporary campus for the first four years starting from 2016 to 2020.
In the first and current academic year, the number of students who will get admissions into the Post Graduate Diploma Programme (PGDP) are 54 and gradually their number will be increased to get up to an aggregate student strength of 120 in the 4th year. The complete project report for the permanent campuses is under process and subsequently the process would be initiated to establish the campuses.
The Cabinet also approved formation of an IIM Jammu Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 for the operation and management of the IIM. Central government will organize Board of Governors to the Jammu IIM to govern and operate the institute.
Last month, Prime Minister had announced the development package for Jammu. This package includes all primary needs like health, education, employment, agriculture and tourism. Establishing an IIM at Jammu is an aspiring move and certainly it will help the youth in the location where there is continuous violence.
IIMs don’t just teach subjects to the students but also help them to be good team players with an understanding of practical world. The education at IIM ignites young minds towards innovative ideas and improved vision to the world.
