IIT Kharagpur to start MBBS courses
IIT Kharagpur, one of the biggest names for engineering is going beyond that and is set to give MBBS courses as well. By the end of 2017, a three acre plot on the campus, the 400 bedded super specialty hospital called Dr B C Roy Institute of Medical Science & Research would be ready.
The government has already sanctioned a grant of Rs.230 crore last year for this purpose. Construction work will begin shortly and is anticipated to be completed in twenty six months, IIT-Kgp director Partha Pratim Chakrabarti stated.
The authorities have already sought-after approval from the Medical Council of Republic of India (MCI) for providing undergrad medical education courses like MBBS.
IIT Kharagpur, far-famed round the world for its engineering courses, would be the first one within the IIT system to venture into medical education.
Besides serving the local public, the hospital will work on biomedical, clinical and translational research.
Drug style and delivery are alternative key research areas to which the hospital can contribute.
This move by the IIT will bring the two major education streams of engineering and medicine together in education and research. The hospital is planning to use technologies like remote diagnostics, telemedicine, teleradiology, and expert systems which cover what the cellular network cannot.
