Government to study to set up the bullet train network
In order to check the feasibility in other areas of the country to set up the bullet train network, the central government is conducting a detailed study.
Currently, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Train project has been sanctioned by the government.
The project which is known as the bullet train project is expected to be finished by 2023 at the length of 508 km.
The Union Minister Suresh Angadi said that the government would study the feasibility of launching bullet trains on other routes also after the successful completion of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad project.
During the Question Hour in Rajya Sabha, the minister stated that the Centre is mulling to launch the bullet train on other routes including Delhi-Kolkata, Delhi-Mumbai and other cities.
The estimated cost for the Mumbai- Ahmedabad High-Speed Train Project is ₹1,08,000 crore. The project is being implemented by National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL). Financial and technical assistance is provided by the Japan government.
As of June 2019, ₹3,226.8 crore was spent on this project. He also said that the project is viable since 36,000 people would travel on an average and the expected fare would be ₹3,000.
When questioned on the land acquisition issues in Gujarat and Maharashtra, the minister said that over 97 per cent farmers in Gujarat approved to this project and 297 villages are adhering to this.
In Maharashtra, some areas are problematic as the farmers did not give their consent to this project. However, the minister hopes they would also approve and the project would be finished as expected by the estimated date.
He also said that the bullet train would minimize the impact on environment and ecology as it is being made on an elevated track.
