Government extends UK air travel restrictions till Feb 14
The UK COVID-19 strain has been trembling the world for the past few months. As per the WHO, the UK variant of COVID has spread to 70 countries. The UK variant is more contagious. Researchers suspect that it could be more deadly. But, still, it is not yet confirmed.
In this context, the Centre extended the restrictions on flights from the UK to India till February 14.
However, the government has not completely suspended the flights. But it restricted the number of flights to the UK.
The Civil Aviation Ministry wrote a letter to British Airways and Virgin Atlantic Airlines stating that the restrictions on flights between India and the UK would be continued till February 14.
As per the restrictions, only a limited number of flights will operate from various regions across the country to the UK.
The government decided to operate only 30 flights in a week from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad to the UK. Among them, 15 flights are operated by the Indian carriers and the remaining by the UK carriers.
In the wake of new COVID strain in the UK, the government decided to suspend all flights connecting the UK and India from the last week of December to the first week of January.
Later, flight operations from the UK to India began on January 8. However, the Indian government put restrictions on the number of flights operated between both the counties.
As the number of coronavirus cases has been growing across the UK, the British government announced lockdown. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that lockdown in England would be in force until March 8. He also announced various new measures to control the number of coronavirus cases in the country.
