In the wake of new strain of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom, Indian government suspended flights from the region.

Recently, Britain announced that a new strain of COVID-19 has been found there, which is highly contagious.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Saturday stating that a new variant of the coronavirus was found in Britain. It was found that the new virus strain was 70 per cent more transmissible than the existing strains of COVID-19. He added that it was the likely reason of faster transmission of new infections across the region in recent weeks.

However, there is no evidence that the virus is more lethal or it can cause more severe health issues. He also added that there is no evidence that the new strain will affect the effectiveness of the vaccine.

The announcement of Britain worried many countries. Several countries suspended the flights from the country as a precautionary measure.

India also announced a temporary suspension of flights from the UK in a preventive measure following the announcement of the British Prime Minister. This suspension will be in force till December 31.

The Union Ministry of Civil Aviation announced this matter stating that the suspension comes into force from today night till December 31, 2020, considering the existing situation in the UK.

The Ministry also said that passengers arriving from the UK have to undergo COVID-19 test at airports on their arrival till the suspension comes into force.
