Indian states that issue COVID guidelines

As the number of Covid cases is rising in various countries, including China and Japan, the government of India asked states and union territories (UTs) to take preventive measures to control the spread of infection.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya hold a meeting with officials to review the situation in India. Before that, the Union Health Ministry issued guidelines for states and UTs asking them to keep track of emerging Covid variants.

BF.7, the Omicron subvariant, was first detected by the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre. This variant is highly infectious.  Three cases of this variant have been reported in India, two from Gujarat and one from Odisha.

In this context, various state governments issued guidelines for international passengers. They started screening the samples taken from them at various airports across the country.

The Karnataka government started monitoring international passengers at Bengaluru airport in the wake of rising Covid cases. It also said that it would send positive samples for genome sequence as per the advisory of the Union Health Ministry. It will help the government to keep track of emerging variants.

The Kerala government wanted to intensify preventive measures to control the spread of the virus transmission. In its advisory issued for the public, the state government urged people to take steps to protect themselves from the virus and avoid contact with people who have Covid symptoms.

The Maharashtra government decided to form a task force to keep track of emerging variants and review the situation.

The Uttar Pradesh government also decided to increase vigilance across the state. It asked people to follow Covid precautions like wearing a face mask in public places.

Delhi government will hold an emergency meeting to discuss the situation in the city. It wishes to keep track of the Covid situation and ramp up genome sequencing of samples to take necessary steps.
